There is a lot of discussion on SOTW about how to get a big sound out of a C-Melody, but if I want a gutsy tenor sax sound, then I will play my tenor sax. I can get more sound out of it with a tenor mouthpiece, and then it sounds more like a tenor, but I really don't see the point of trying to make a C-Melody sound like a tenor or an alto or compete with an amplified guitar. It is quiet, which may possibly make it a good practice instrument for home. I have tried alto and tenor mouthpieces, but my preference so far is the old C-Melody mouthpiece that came with with the sax - very small tip opening. It was only when I stopped trying to treat it like a tenor that I could start to play it. It took me a while to get a decent note out of it (not helped by lots of leaks and a faulty octave mechanism). The strange thing about the Conn C-Melody is how very different it is to blow compared with my tenor and alto saxes.
